IP Rating Meaning
We believe you have heard of IP65 before, so what is it? Before introducing it, let us discuss the “IP” rating first. “IP” is the abbreviation of “Ingress Protection”. The IP rating is the protection level against the intrusion of foreign objects for the electrical equipment shell. It is defined by the international standard EN 60529 (British Standard BS EN 60529:1992).
The IP rating is composed of two digits, the first digit indicates dust-proof; the second digit indicates waterproof. The larger the number, the better the effect of protection. Specific protection levels and effects are shown in the following table:
Take IP65 Rating as an example, the first digit “6” means it can completely protect against dust; meanwhile, the second digit “5” refers to its protection against strong jets of water.
What are IP69K LED walls?
Sometimes you may see the protection rating of IP69K. For example, LianTronics latest outdoor small-pitch LED screen -- MPA Mini Series -- adopts an upgraded IP69K protection rating, which is different from the common-seen IP65 rating. So what are IP69K LED walls?
An IP69K LED wall means it can withstand intensive cleaning with high-pressure and high-temperature jets to suit all cruel conditions. Additionally, the test for IP69K LED walls is more stringent than that for IP65 ones, which greatly ensures the overall protection performance to fit in various severe scenarios of high temperature and high pressure.
Why IP Rating is Important for Outdoor LED Screens?
The outdoor LED screen will be tested to prove that it is both durable and protected. A high IP-rated outdoor LED screen is suitable for a variety of outdoor conditions to withstand cruel climates that may harm the LED display. The longer the service time for an outdoor LED wall, the higher return the investment is. Furthermore, the IP rating offers confidence for users as well. With the functions of totally protected against dust and low-pressure jets of water, users don’t have to worry about their outdoor LED screens often.
What’s the Appropriate IP Rating for Outdoor LED Screens?
Normally, the IP rating for outdoor LED screens should be at least IP54 and ideally IP65. As we discussed above, the IP65 rating can completely protect against dust while protecting against jets, making it satisfied with general outdoor environment.
As some application scenarios suffer more harsh weather or need special requirements, higher IP ratings for LED walls are demanded. For example, street furniture and bus shelter displays often encounter dust accumulation as they are usually installed along the streets. For convenience, administrators tend to flush the displays with high-pressure water jets in some countries Hence, it is necessary for those outdoor LED screens to rate IP69K for higher protection.
